There has to be a reason for that. I've heard worse stories then that of people doing outrageous things to survive. However I think if its God's will, your will means squat. For instance lets say during that 10 minutes of falling asleep you didn't wake up. Would God be annoyed? Probably not. It would just mean that 10 minute time was His time. Ever wounder why you woke up? God must not be finished with you yet. To coin a phrase- What ever doesn't kill you makes you stronger. I'm not sure how much pain I could with hold. Would I just lie down and die? No. Would I be strong enough to do what you did? Probably not. The will to live is very strong. There has to be a reason for that.
