Honestly, I’m in 10th grade and I’m assigned anywhere from 3 – 8 hours of homework a night. On average, it takes me 5 hours to get it done.
My typical night:
4pm, arrive home
4:10 begin hw
(1 hour math, 1.5 hours outlining for history, 3/4 hour on an english essay, 1/2 hour translating for spanish, 1 hour writing a speech for public speaking, 1/2 hour science homework + whatever long term project I have to do [usually 1 due per week] and study for any test or quiz coming up)
5:30 eat
6:00 me time
6:30 practice instrument
7:00 continue homework
any time after 12:00 go to bed
6:30 am wake up
I go to a collage prep school, but I don’t understand the point in doing all of this work. I got to school for 7 hours a day, 25 minutes for break and 35 for lunch, no time between classes (not even 2 minutes). So I do almost as much homework as I spend time in school.
Then, when I get to school, the teachers tell me I should be getting more sleep. It makes me want to start screaming at them.
I have too much work!! I’m pretty sure I remember learning last year that long term memories are formed in the brain while one is sleeping. How is this supposed to happen if I’m doing so much work?
so please, let me know if this is right? I have no time to just be a kid. I also feel like I’m suffering from sleep deprivation (I don’t even know if that is real though). I feel like an old person, always complaining about being tired, or my legs hurting, or my back aching. If you’re in school, do you get this much homework? Is this much homework even effective? Am I doing useless work?
thanks so much, any answer to any of these questions would help me greatly.
If you're still in need of sleep, I recommend the Natural Sleep Made Simple guide. This book contains natural, totally safe, and PROVEN methods that will let you get to sleep every night with ease. Money back guarantee.

I know exactly how you feel. I’m actually in 10th grade also. I have tons of work and it ends up feeling like a waste of time. It may not feel worth it now, but just do your best or you’ll definately regret it when your older. And look on the bright side, it wont last forever.
(:
When I was in high school I never had homework
‘Me Time’ is always the best part. anyways, yeah hw sucks!
Is all this homework actual given tasks to complete outside of class or just unfinished class work? If it’s unfinished class work, you need to improve class time efficiency.
Also, perhaps it depend on how much you’re able to learn. If you’re sleepy in class, that means you’re not concentrating 100%, which means that when you come home, it’ll take longer for you tom complete your homework because you have to reread whatever was discussed in class or because it takes longer for you to porcess the information ’cause you’re still tired.
With things such as translation, the more words you learn, the less time you’ll be spending (in my opinion). Also with public speaking/speech writing, the more you write, the more experiece you have, thus less time will be invlovled.
Another thing can be that you’re a perfectionist and that you put too much time and effort in a piece of homework which doesn’t require as much work. Your handwriting doesn’t have to be super neat, and all your notes don’t have to look like as if they’re computerised.
Long term memories are NOT formed in the brain through sleep. Here’s how school works:
1. You go to school and learn certain pieces of information. You take notes on that information to keep it handy and remember it.
2. Homework is assigned so that you “rehearse”/regurgitate the information you’ve been given, which helps you remember the information.
3. You study to further imbue the information in your mind.
Do yourself a favor: TAKE A BREAK! I bet somewhere in that schedule you can find time to do NOTHING! And if you’re not doing homework during the weekends, CONTINUE to do that! Please, take it easy! You’re just a kid, after all.
Oh yeah, and don’t do homework on Friday. Because it simply doesn’t matter.
ha ha ha I feel bad for you and know what it’s like. I used to be you.
I used to cheat pertaining to how long I practice my instrument.
First, let your parents know that you’re overwhelmed. It’s very important that they know and help you. Maybe you don’t need to take so many classes?
Second, the teachers will always tell you that you need to sleep more… it’s super annoying since they’re being hypocritical by assigning you too much work.
Third, can you ask for a list of what’s due ahead of time, prioritize, and do it during the weekends?
have a serious talk with some of classmates (those with good grades). ask about their study habits. maybe you can pick up some tips from them. but i can tell you right now you are spending too much time per subject. teachers are aware of what students can reasonably do as far as homework is concerned. they are aware that you have other extra curricular activities too. they will not give you assigned tasks that average students cannot handle in a given time frame.
there must be some shortcuts you can do. is outlining really needed for history? do you really have to allot 1.5 hrs on that?
you need to re-evaluate you study habits. you can do this. try to cut back 15-20 minutes (of study) per subject. use these extra minutes for sleep.
wow that really sucks. Honestly, i dont know what the point of homework is. I mean like we just spent an entire day at school. We dont need homework. I dont really have too much homework and if i do i dont always do it -_- i think your doing useless work. That is just way too much homework for a teenager. these teachers really need to get a life.
