How Can I Sleep With A Horrible Sore Throat?

I am 18 years old. Whenever I’m sick, I get horrendous sore throats (usually 5-6 per year, judging that this is my third so far in 2009). I get strep throat about once per year, and the others feel almost as bad. To give you a point of reference, I got all four Wisdom teeth out on the very same day I got a sore throat (last summer), and I was taking Vicoden, and my mouth didn’t bother me at all because the throat hurt so bad.
These sore throats are so bad that I can’t sleep. I lie in bed, with my throat in agony, and numbers and times don’t make any sense and I’m sort of half-hallucinating the whole time.
I am SO tired but I can’t nap and even if I could, I wouldn’t, because then I wouldn’t be tired enough at night. Is there any way to sleep when you have a sore throat? I’ve tried salt water, cucumbers, throat spray, over the counter medication, bringing a thermos of wheat tea to bed, and nothing has worked yet.
