I’d give it a few days if you can because it takes a couple of weeks to build in your system to reach a therapuetic level. I think you should be aware, however, that in rare instances, it can cause mania and or depression. If you feel like you are in over your head, call your doctor.
From the prescribers info. section:
“Psychiatric: Emotional upset, depression, psychosis, aggression, hyperactivity, hostility, and behavioral deterioration.”

The insomnia is most likely related to the bi polar.
The anticonvulsant medicine should cause sleepiness, & suppress bi polar symptoms, give it a few days to build up a blood level. If it doesnt get better after 2 weeks max call the Doc. for med adjustment.
Good luck hope ya feel better soon

It sounds to me like your body was letting go of a possible build up of stress that you have been bravely carrying and its very possible the drugs helped you to relax enough to have a good old cry! It sounds like a good thing to me. Don’t fight it – cry when you need to and it will help with the emotional healing.
Bi-polar is a difficult thing and I feel for you.

Depekote is pretty popular…not that I am an expert but I do have friends and family members who are bi-polar….before the med did you cry for no reason?….because it does take about 2 weeks to work good in your system?..so if you happened to be depressed and then took it it’s just a coincidence that it happened at the same time …however I would talk to your MD to make sure you aren’t having a bad side effect…because there are other types or meds to try….but you have to take them for at least 2 to 3 weeks to see if they help…..the sleeping bit…well sometimes this does happen…I know people that take Seroquel to sleep…which is sometimes too strong for people and they sleep like a lot….so there again you might have to try a different med but you’ll really just need to call the Doc…good luck….

i took depakote for epilepsi a couple of years ago. i didn’t have the problems you have but i know people usually have trouble getting used to a medication like that the first week or so. give it like a week. if it bothers you after a week its either the medication is no good for you or you’re on too high of a dose of the medication. if i knew how many mg’s you were taking i would have a better idea. some people shake a little and can’t sleep the first week. you can email me if you want to ask me anymore quesitons.

how long have you been on depekote and what if any medication were you on before? this is needed. but i would say if you have been on for more than a few days and its like you havnt taken any at all then you are jumping back and forth from manic to depression. do what ever you can to relax what makes you relax stay as calm as possible if you dont start to feel stable between moods with in two weeks call you doctor. but it should start builing in your body within a week
