Try avoiding any caffeine or alcohol. Try reading a book, take a relaxing bath. Try to maintain a regular schedule of sleep. like going to bed the same time every night.

i have the same problem....although I've always had a problem with sleeping since i was a lttle girl...they usually say there's a underlying problem but sometimes it is what it is your body won't let you sleep. I've tried exercises....walking before bed. tea which works for some. nothing.....i also use Advil PM and Goody PM....i know i didn't help much but your not alone let me know if you find out the secret......But what ever you do don't get prescribed sleep aids.....they are more addictive than over the counter.......unfortunately your body starts to depend on the meds to sleep....so any other way than medicine is a good way.....Good Luck

Hi!
You really don't mention what happens when you try to go to sleep... Do you worry about things? Is your mind racing? If not, there are several things that may be going on. As several people here have mentioned, doing things like exercise, watching your diet, such as limiting/avoiding caffeine and alcohol, and yes, at times melatonin does work.... but research shows that it don't work on many folks... You didn't mention how old you were... if you are a teen or younger, I would tend to stay away from melatonin as it does affect the production of human growth hormone, so it may literally delay development or "stunt your growth"...
I suffer from 5 out of the 6 major sleep disorders (including insomnia) and would like for you to take a look at my blog.... it is at http://www.insomniareliefreviews.blogspot.com I hope that the information I offer there will help!!!

I feel for you. Insomnia and I are old friends.
This is what has worked for me:
1. A walk before bedtime. Yeah, the experts say no exercise before bed, but I find that a walk releases some of the day's tension, and wears me out.
2.I lie flat on my back. I consciously relax one area of my body at a time, starting with the top of my head and working my way to my feet. I don't go past an area until I feel it relax. One way to do this is to pretend your body is made of solid iron or marble---anything incredibly heavy. Feel---or imagine you feel---your body sinking into the mattress beneath you. Another way to relax is to pretend you're on a cloud, so light you are floating. Either way works for me.
3. If I'm super stressed, and still can't sleep, I take Diphenhydramine. It's just generic Benadryl. It's used in a lot of over the counter sleep aids. It is mild, and you don't have to deal with a bunch of other stuff in the med---just something that will relax you enough to help you sleep. Benadryl is just an anti-histamine, and I haven't found it to be addictive or anything like that.
Hope this helps a little.
