Studies of yacht racers of the transatlantic show that those who perform the best, receive an average of five and a half hours of sleep during races. These races can last several months under the averse conditions of pitch darkness, storms, risk of collision with bigger ships and losing bets.
In studies on college students, one study looked at long-term sleep deprivation in college couples whose sleep was reduced to a total of 5.5 hours of sleep per night over an 8 month period. In a different study, college students were maxed out to 5 hours and 30 minutes of sleep for 2 entire months. In both studies, there were no major harmful effects on behavioral, physiological or cognitive functioning, giving the impression that consistent sleep loss of 2 or 3 hours per night for up to 8 months does not create a performance deficiency.
Physicians who are undergoing residency practice must perform the requests of medicine, including but not limited to, surgery and emergency room care, for months in a row with an average of 5.5 hours of sleep per night.
Research studies on insomniacs indicate that they average only approximately 5 and 3 quarter hours of sleep (only 2 hours under normal sleepers) and do not exhibit worse daytime performance or readiness as compared to above average sleepers. (Insomniacs do not have the same reaction to sleep loss as average sleepers because their more powerful wake drive, which lowers homeostatic sleep force, also significantly decreases drowsiness and performance decrements).
