Cat Twitching And Breathing Fast In Her Sleep?

My 4 month old kitten was spayed a few days ago and things seem to be going well now…however, she was sleeping next to me and she started to twitch all of her limbs and her breathing rate increased a lot. i gave her a dose of pain medication prescribed by the doctor about an hour ago and am now sure if that has anything to do with it. When i saw her twitching i just touched her and woke her up and she stopped…
Any ideas as to what this was?

Since she stopped twitching when you woke her, it sounds as though she was just dreaming. If it would have been a medical problem, it likely would have persisted after she woke up.

Most likely dreaming about chasing a piece of string or some sort of toy.
I think that most of the answers on here will say the same thing.
There’s no reason to be concerned and rush her in to the vet. Animals do dream and when they do they will twitch or their breathing rate will increase, no cause for alarm. Now if they start sleepwalking and stand up on their back legs and stretch out their front legs, then take them in.

Relax.Your kitten is going to be fine.My computer is next to our bed
and I see my four (and foster) twitching all the time and breathing
erratically.Just wait until you get woke up from a sound sleep by
a Norwegian Forest Cat hitting you because of a bad dream.(Ouch).

Oooh, that sounds scary. I’d call your vet and ask if you should bring her in… and see what they have to say about it. I’m sure she’s fine. My cat does that in her sleep and usually she is having a dream, like my dogs do. I hope she’s okay!

She was most likely having a nightmare.

She is dreaming. Maybe she is chasing something. Or it could be a nightmare. My cats, dogs, and I do it too so don’t worry.
