I am getting out soon and I was curious what other nukes ended up doing for a living after they got out. I don’t think I could ever do the nuclear engineering thing again. No more insane working hours and sleep deprivation marathons.
If you're still in need of sleep, I recommend the Natural Sleep Made Simple guide. This book contains natural, totally safe, and PROVEN methods that will let you get to sleep every night with ease. Money back guarantee.

Heh!
Insane hours and sleep deprivations – Been there, done that. SSN means Saturdays, Sundays, and Nights.
I do clinical publishing for a large pharmaceutical company – Attention to detail, flexibility, willingness to buckle down and do the job, ability to manage stress, and ability to manage difficult people whilst juggling conflicting priorities are the *real* requirements of the job. Sound familiar? Oh, they’ll *tell* you it’s all about publishing, but in reality, it’s really about focus and attention while in the middle of a whirlwind.
Fact of the matter is, your most valuable skills have nothing to do with reactor operations, and have everything to do with your work habits and ability to manage people – including superiors, peers, AND subordinates. Nucs have those skills in massive overabundance.
So – Find a job where keeping your cool under pressure is the key requirement, and you’re golden.
Good luck!
Just ran across your question. I’m an ex MM1SW (Nuke) ELT. I’m currently working in the data center construction and service industry. It turns out that operating a reactor plant is really good experience for working in mission-critical environments. Who knew?
I separated in 1999 and haven’t split an atom since. If you know ex nukes that need a job in the Washington DC area let me know. I may be able to help. Also, check me out at:

Well what you will find in the civilian world, is that there are no more “insane working hours” and “sleep deprivation marathons”, at least not like there where when we were active. I was not a nuke, that aside, nothing on the civilian side of the house is the same as what we did in the Navy from the standpoint of working hours, etc. I would not rule out Nuke until you look at the civilian opportunities objectively! Seriously!

When I got out I couldn’t find a similar job any where. nuclear power in the US has been a dead industry since the 70’s
