I wouldn’t recommend it, but chances are that you’d be okay. Without knowing your full medical history, it’s hard to say exactly what all could happen.
The reason that you don’t take them together is that alcohol can increase the side effects of Ambien. All of the nasty things that your doctor warned you about, even if you’ve never had them happen before, could suddenly crop up, or could show up and be a LOT worse.
Ambien is processed from your system very quickly (half-life of about 2 hours; if you take a 10mg pill, that means that in 2 hours, 5mg are left; in 4 hours, 2.5mg, etc). However, there would be trace amounts present the next night. This probably wouldn’t be enough to cause any problems, but if you’re unlucky, it could.
If you want to go out drinking, you should contact your doctor and ask about trying a different medication, or make sure that it would be okay in your case. You might have other conditions that would make it VERY dangerous, or your doctor might think that you’ll be fine as long as you only have one or two drinks.
